In metallurgy, crystals nucleate at random sites and grow outward until they impinge. The resulting polycrystalline mosaic is a Voronoi tessellation — each grain owns all space closer to its nucleus than to any other. Grain boundaries are where different crystal orientations meet, controlling material strength and conductivity.
