Chip-Firing: Toppling Waves & Fixed Points

In chip-firing on a graph, each vertex with chips ≥ its degree fires, sending one chip along each edge. The process terminates at a fixed point (stable configuration) or enters a periodic orbit. Toppling waves — synchronous mass topplings — reveal the Abelian sandpile structure: the final stable state is independent of the toppling order, a fact proved by the Abelian property of the sandpile group.
