The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain alternates between hopping amplitudes v (intracell) and w (intercell). The winding number ν = 0 (trivial) when |v| > |w|, and ν = 1 (topological) when |w| > |v|, protected by chiral symmetry. Edge states appear in the topological phase.
