Physics

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) breaks time-reversal symmetry in magnon systems, opening topological gaps.

For D/J > threshold, the Chern number |C| = 1, giving chiral edge spin waves that propagate unidirectionally and are robust to defects — a magnonic analog of the quantum Hall effect.
