In the 2D XY model, spins rotate freely in-plane. Topological vortices (winding number ±1) are stable excitations that cannot be removed by smooth deformations. The Kosterlitz-Thouless transition occurs when bound vortex-antivortex pairs suddenly unbind at T_KT, destroying quasi-long-range order without symmetry breaking.
