The 2D XY model undergoes the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition via topological defect (vortex) unbinding. Above T_BKT, free vortex-antivortex pairs proliferate. Watch +1 vortices (red) and –1 antivortices (blue) annihilate as temperature drops.
