Magnetic skyrmions (Skyrme 1962, first observed MnSi 2009) are topologically protected spin textures with integer charge Q = (1/4π)∫ S·(∂xS × ∂yS) dA = ±1. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) from spin-orbit coupling in non-centrosymmetric magnets stabilizes these whirling spin configurations. Click on the spin field to inject skyrmions.
