Tidal Locking Dynamics

A moon's tidal bulge is misaligned with the planet's direction due to its own spin. This creates a gravitational torque that gradually slows (or speeds up) the moon's rotation until it equals its orbital period — tidal locking. The Moon is locked to Earth; Mercury is in a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance.
