Magnetic Reconnection — Field Line Topology

Magnetic reconnection occurs at current sheets where oppositely directed field lines break and re-join, converting magnetic energy to kinetic energy and heat. The Sweet-Parker model predicts slow reconnection (rate ~ S^(−1/2) where S is Lundquist number); Petschek's model allows fast reconnection via standing shocks. This simulation shows the Harris current sheet and reconnection geometry.
