STOCHASTIC RESONANCE

Array of threshold detectors: noise can improve signal detection (SNR peak)

PARAMETERS

SNR = — dB
Stochastic Resonance: A subthreshold signal (A < θ) cannot trigger a threshold detector alone. Adding noise of the right amplitude σ* enables detection — SNR is maximized at an optimal noise level.

Array SR: M detectors average their outputs, further improving SNR ~ √M.

Found in: sensory neurons, SQUID magnetometers, climate models.
