About

Stochastic resonance: adding noise to a sub-threshold signal can improve detection. The weak periodic signal alone never crosses the threshold. With the right noise amplitude, random fluctuations occasionally boost the signal over threshold — in sync with the signal's peaks. Too little noise: no crossings. Too much: crossings are random, uncorrelated. The optimal SNR occurs at an intermediate noise level — the resonance.
