A Flashing Ratchet switches between an asymmetric sawtooth potential (ON) and a flat potential (OFF). Thermal diffusion during OFF allows particles to spread; ON state traps them asymmetrically. This nonequilibrium cycle extracts directed work from noise — the principle of Brownian motors and molecular machines.
