A chain of N masses connected by springs has N normal modes — collective oscillation patterns at discrete frequencies ω_j = 2√(k/m)·sin(jπ/2(N+1)). Any motion decomposes into these modes. The phase space portrait shows the position-velocity trajectory of the first mass.
