Magnons are quanta of spin waves — collective precessions of magnetic moments. At low k, the ferromagnetic dispersion ω∝k² (quadratic) vs antiferromagnetic ω∝k (linear). Holstein-Primakoff maps spins to bosonic operators, valid for small deviations from order.
