On frustrated lattices (triangular, kagome, pyrochlore), antiferromagnetic interactions cannot be simultaneously satisfied — creating a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy and emergent gauge structure. The "ice rules" in spin ice give rise to magnetic monopole excitations.
