Human color perception is three-dimensional (L/M/S cone responses), even though wavelength is one-dimensional. Many different spectra map to the same perceived color (metamers). The CIE 1931 XYZ color space defines standard observer functions x̄(λ), ȳ(λ), z̄(λ) that capture this trichromacy.
