Social spreading requiring reinforcement across network layers
Complex contagion (Centola & Macy 2007) requires multiple exposures to spread, unlike simple SIR epidemics. On multiplex networks (multiple relationship layers), nodes adopt a behavior when the fraction of adopting neighbors exceeds threshold φ, aggregated across layers. Layer coupling and network topology determine whether global cascades are possible.
