Physarum polycephalum (slime mold) spontaneously forms efficient transport networks between food sources. The Tero et al. (2010) model: tubes thicken with flow (positive feedback), thin without flow (pruning). The organism recreated the Tokyo rail network — same nodes, similar topology.
