Abelian Sandpile — Toppling Waves

The Abelian sandpile model (Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld) is the canonical self-organized criticality system. Grains are added one at a time; sites with ≥4 grains topple, sending one grain to each neighbor. Avalanche sizes follow a power law with exponent τ ≈ 1.2.
