Sand Pile Toppling Waves

The Abelian sandpile model (Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld, 1987): grains pile up on a grid. When a cell reaches 4 grains it topples, sending one grain to each neighbor. Avalanches exhibit power-law size distributions — a hallmark of self-organized criticality. Click to drop grains.
