The RNA World Hypothesis
RNA molecules can both store genetic information (like DNA) and catalyze chemical reactions (like proteins).
This dual role — the "RNA World" — may have been the first form of life, before the separation into DNA (storage) and protein (catalysis).

Purple = dual-function
Gray = inactive/dead
