Two isospectral (same eigenvalues) but non-isometric drums — Kac's 1966 question, answered NO by Gordon-Webb-Wolpert 1992
Drum A
Drum B
Mark Kac asked in 1966: "Can you hear the shape of a drum?" i.e., do the vibration frequencies (Laplacian eigenvalues) uniquely determine the domain's shape? Gordon, Webb, and Wolpert (1992) answered NO — constructing two differently-shaped polygonal regions with identical eigenvalue spectra using Sunada's transplantation method. This lab shows the first known pair, built from L-shaped heptominoes.
