Replica Trick & Spin Glass

Disordered magnets, free energy landscapes, and the replica method

Spin glasses are disordered magnets with random ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic bonds, leading to frustrated energy landscapes with exponentially many local minima. The Edwards-Anderson order parameter qEA = ⟨⟨Si⟩²⟩ distinguishes the glass phase (q>0) from the paramagnetic phase (q=0). The replica trick computes quenched disorder averages: [ln Z]J = limn→0 d/dn [Zn]J. Parisi's replica symmetry breaking solution (1979, Nobel 2021) revealed an ultrametric structure of pure states.
