Quantum Spin Hall & Helical Edge States

The Z₂ topological insulator hosts helical edge states protected by time-reversal symmetry: spin-up electrons propagate rightward, spin-down leftward. Kramers pairs at time-reversal-invariant momenta cannot be gapped by any TR-preserving perturbation.
