Polar Planimeter

A planimeter is a mechanical instrument that measures the area of an arbitrary planar shape by tracing its boundary. The polar planimeter, invented by Jakob Amsler in 1854, uses a fixed pole, a tracer arm, and a measuring wheel. As the tracer follows the boundary of a closed curve, the wheel accumulates rotation proportional to the enclosed area — a physical embodiment of Green's theorem. Draw a shape below to see it in action.
