Worm-Like Chain Model

Semiflexible polymer conformations and persistence length

Polymer Parameters

The worm-like chain (WLC) model describes semiflexible polymers like DNA, actin, and collagen. The persistence length Lp = κ/(kBT) quantifies bending rigidity: for L ≫ Lp the chain is flexible; for L ≪ Lp it is rod-like. The tangent correlation decays as ⟨t(s)·t(0)⟩ = e−s/Lp. End-to-end distance: ⟨R²⟩ = 2LpL[1 − Lp/L(1−e−L/Lp)].
