Symmetry5-fold (non-periodic)
Penrose tiling (1974): covers the plane with two tile shapes but never repeats — no translational periodicity. The ratio of fat to thin rhombi approaches φ (golden ratio). Inflation/deflation: each tile splits into smaller copies, mapping the tiling to itself at a different scale. Connected to quasicrystals discovered by Shechtman (Nobel 2011) and the de Bruijn pentagrid construction.
