Neuronal Avalanches — Critical Brain Hypothesis

Beggs & Plenz (2003) found that cortical activity avalanches follow a power law P(s) ∝ s^−3/2, identical to the BTW sandpile at criticality. The brain may operate near a critical point maximizing dynamic range and information transmission. Tune branching ratio σ and watch the exponent shift.
