Helfrich Membrane Elasticity

Thermal Fluctuation Spectrum & Persistence Length
F_H = ∫(κ/2·(∇²h)² + σ/2·(∇h)²)dA

⟨|h_q|²⟩ = k_BT/(κq⁴ + σq²)

ξ_p = a·exp(4πκ/3k_BT)

κ: bending modulus
σ: surface tension
Helfrich Hamiltonian (1973) describes lipid bilayer membranes. The bending modulus κ≈10–30 k_BT for biological membranes. Thermal undulations are suppressed at short scales (κ) but grow as 1/q⁴. The persistence length ξ_p diverges exponentially with κ — stiff membranes remain flat over long distances.
