Magnetic reconnection occurs when oppositely directed field lines are forced together in a current sheet, break, and reconnect with a new topology. The Sweet-Parker model predicts a reconnection rate v_in/v_A ~ S^(-1/2) where S = Lundquist number = v_A L/eta is the ratio of convection to diffusion.
