About: The Lorentz gas (1905) is a model of an electron bouncing off fixed hard disk scatterers arranged in a triangular lattice. Elastic collisions with disks (specular reflection) produce chaotic trajectories with positive Lyapunov exponent — nearby trajectories separate exponentially. The system is ergodic, mixing, and deterministic yet unpredictable beyond a few collisions. It is the prototypical model for deterministic chaos and diffusion.
