The KS equation models unstable flame fronts and thin film dynamics. It has negative viscosity (∂ₓₓu drives instability) balanced by hyperviscosity (∂ₓₓₓₓu). The result: deterministic chaos with a positive Lyapunov exponent. The space-time plot above shows the characteristic turbulent pattern.
