Kibble-Zurek Mechanism: Vortex Formation

When a system is quenched through a symmetry-breaking phase transition, defects (vortices, strings, monopoles) inevitably form. The Kibble-Zurek mechanism predicts the defect density from the quench rate: slower cooling → fewer, larger domains → fewer defects. The scaling law ξ̂ ~ τQν/(1+zν) is universal.
