Spiral waves in excitable media model life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (ventricular fibrillation). The medium has three states: resting (excitable), excited, and refractory (recovering). A broken wave front curls into a rotating spiral, sustaining itself indefinitely — the mechanism behind re-entrant tachycardia. Defibrillation resets all cells simultaneously.
