Epitaxial Growth: Ehrlich-Schwoebel Barrier

In molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), atoms deposited on a crystal surface diffuse and attach to step edges. The Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier prevents atoms from descending steps, causing mound instability and layer-by-layer oscillations in surface roughness.
