Epicycloid Curves

Watch a rolling circle trace beautiful roulette curves

An epicycloid is traced by a point on a circle of radius r rolling outside a circle of radius R. When k=R/r is an integer, the curve closes after one revolution with k cusps. The hypocycloid (inside rolling) at k=3 is a deltoid; k=4 is an astroid. The pantograph-like mechanism was used to engrave banknotes.
