Band gap condition: |½ Tr(M)| > 1 → evanescent modes → forbidden band.

Bloch wavenumber K: cos(Ka) = ½ Tr(M)

Gap opens at k = nπ/a (Bragg condition). Gap width ∝ impedance contrast.
