Phononic Band Gap — Locally Resonant Metamaterial

Locally resonant phononic metamaterials create band gaps well below the Bragg diffraction limit by coupling elastic waves to local resonators. Each unit cell contains a heavy mass on a soft spring; near the resonance frequency, the effective mass density turns negative, forbidding wave propagation.
