Ecosystem Resilience
TIPPING POINTS & CATASTROPHIC BIFURCATIONS
Fold bifurcation: ecosystems have two stable states (healthy / degraded) separated by an unstable equilibrium. As stress increases, the system approaches a tipping point where the lower branch disappears — triggering a sudden collapse. Critically, recovery requires going back far past the tipping point (hysteresis): this is why prevention is far cheaper than restoration.
