Robert May (1972) showed analytically that random ecological communities become unstable when σ√(SC) > 1, where S is species richness, C is connectance, and σ is interaction strength. This contradicts the intuition that diversity begets stability. Here we sample random community matrices and visualize eigenvalue spectra (Wigner semicircle) and stability boundaries.
