Double-Scroll Attractor

Chua's circuit (1983) is the simplest autonomous circuit exhibiting chaos. The nonlinear element ("Chua's diode") has piecewise-linear characteristic: h(x) = m₁·x + ½(m₀−m₁)(|x+1|−|x−1|). The double-scroll attractor arises when trajectories wind around two unstable equilibria, jumping between them unpredictably — sensitive dependence on initial conditions in a three-component circuit.
