Chaos and extreme sensitivity in coupled pendula
The double pendulum is a canonical chaotic system. Two nearly identical initial conditions diverge exponentially — the Lyapunov exponent measures this sensitivity. At high energies the motion never repeats; at low energies it approximates coupled harmonic oscillators.
