Crystal Dislocation — Glide, Peierls Barrier & Plastic Flow

An edge dislocation is a lattice defect where an extra half-plane of atoms terminates inside the crystal. Under applied shear stress, it glides along its slip plane — but must overcome the periodic Peierls-Nabarro energy barrier. Taylor's hardening law shows how increasing dislocation density raises yield stress as τ ∝ √ρ.
