Diffusion tensor ellipsoids, orientation distribution function, and tractography
Water diffuses preferentially along white matter fibers. The diffusion tensor D encodes this anisotropy as an ellipsoid. Fractional anisotropy (FA) measures elongation. The orientation distribution function (ODF) resolves fiber crossings that the tensor cannot. Tractography follows streamlines along principal diffusion directions.
