Coral bleaching: above ~28°C zooxanthellae produce toxic ROS under heat stress. Coral expels them, revealing white skeleton. If temperature drops within weeks, zooxanthellae recolonize. Prolonged bleaching → starvation → death. Zooxanthellae supply 90% of coral energy via photosynthesis.
