Galton's 1907 observation: the median of 800 fair-goers' ox-weight guesses was within 1% of the true value. Individual errors (drawn log-normally) are independent and cancel in the aggregate. Social influence (herding) introduces correlations that degrade collective accuracy by reducing the effective sample size.
