Bott's theorem (1959): the homotopy groups of the unitary group U(n) are periodic with period 2, and of the orthogonal group O(n) with period 8. This is the bedrock of K-theory — the classification of vector bundles — and underlies the 8-fold way in condensed matter (Altland-Zirnbauer classes).
