Each individual in generation n independently produces a random number of offspring drawn from a given distribution. The process goes extinct with probability q = the smallest solution of q = G(q), where G is the probability generating function. Critical point: mean offspring μ = 1. For μ ≤ 1, extinction is certain; for μ > 1, survival probability is 1 − q > 0.
