Binaural Beats

Two slightly different frequencies, one in each ear. The brain perceives a phantom beat at the frequency difference — an auditory illusion requiring headphones.

🎧 This effect requires headphones — the two tones must reach each ear separately.

The binaural beat is not a physical sound — it is a neural phenomenon. The olivary nucleus in the brainstem processes the timing difference, generating a perceived oscillation. Research suggests entrainment of neural oscillations may influence cognition and relaxation, though effects vary.
Phase Difference Over Time
The phase difference between left and right ears cycles at the beat rate. One full cycle = one perceived beat. At 7 Hz, ~7 beats per second.
