The Bell model describes molecular adhesion clusters under force. Each bond can break (rate exponential in force, Bell 1978) or reform. This produces a cooperative transition: small clusters detach catastrophically under load, while large clusters can be mechanically stable for long times — the basis of catch bonds and cell adhesion.
